M. James Barrett, Ph.D.

General Partner, New Enterprise Associates

Dr. Barrett is a General Partner of the venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Throughout his tenure with NEA, Dr. Barrett has served on the board of directors of many public and private companies, including CoGenesys (acquired by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries), Iomai Corporation (acquired by Intercell AG), MedImmune, Inc. (acquired by AstraZeneca) and Pharmion (acquired by Celgene Corporation), and he is currently a member of the board of directors of each of Amicus Therapeutics, Inc. and Inhibitex, Inc. Prior to joining NEA in 2001, Dr. Barrett founded and served as chairman and chief executive officer of Sensors for Medicine and Science, Inc. and served as chief executive officer at three other life science companies, including Genetic Therapy, Inc., which he took public in 1991 and subsequently sold to Sandoz Pharmaceuticals (now Novartis). Dr. Barrett has been a member of Targacept’s board of directors since November 2002 and serves on the Compensation Committee.
