Targacept Named One of the Best Employers in North Carolina

Winston-Salem, NC

March 23, 2005

Targacept, Inc., a central nervous system-focused biopharmaceutical company located in the Piedmont Triad Research Park, today announced that it has been recognized as one of the ten “Best Employers in North Carolina.”  The “Best Employers in North Carolina” is a statewide competition designed to motivate companies in North Carolina to focus, measure and move their workplace environments toward excellence.

“We are thrilled to receive this recognition,” said J. Donald deBethizy, Targacept’s President and Chief Executive Officer.  “We strive to provide a desirable work environment and to support our employees in their professional growth.  We seek to emphasize the individual strengths of each of our employees, which allow us to optimize their collective efforts.  I strongly feel that our employees’ talent and teamwork are the key components of our success.”

Other top 10 companies included The Biltmore Company, Clarkston Consulting, Gilead Sciences, Inc., Inspire Pharmaceuticals, Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., Microsoft Corp., Novozymes North America Inc., SAS Institute, Inc. and SpectraSite Communications, Inc.

The competition was sponsored by the North Carolina Society for Human Resources Management, Red Hand Media LLC, publisher of Business North Carolina magazine, and Findley Davis Inc., an independent, fee-for-service human-resources consulting, actuarial and administrative-services firm.  The selection process, conducted by Pennsylvania-based Best Companies Group, was based on an assessment of employee policies and procedures and the results of an internal employee survey. The actual rankings will be published in a special supplement that will be distributed with the May issue of Business North Carolina magazine. Further details about the "Best Employers in North Carolina" competition can be found online at www.bestemployersnc.com.

Targacept was also recently named the 2004 Healthcare / Pharmaceutical Company of the Year by The North Carolina Technology Association (NCTA).

About Targacept
Targacept is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the design, discovery and development of a new class of drugs to treat multiple diseases and disorders of the central nervous system by selectively targeting neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, or NNRs.  NNRs are found on nerve cells throughout the nervous system and serve as key regulators of nervous system activity.  Targacept’s product candidates are designed to selectively target specific NNR subtypes to promote therapeutic effects and limit or eliminate adverse side effects.  In addition to a marketed product, Inversine®, Targacept has product candidates in clinical development for cognitive impairment, including Alzheimer’s disease and age associated memory impairment, pain and depression, as well as multiple ongoing preclinical programs.
