Targacept to Report Second Quarter 2008 Financial Results on August 5, 2008

Targacept, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRGT), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing a new class of drugs known as NNR Therapeutics (TM), today announced that it will conduct a conference call and audio webcast at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 following the after-market release of its financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2008.  J. Donald deBethizy, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, and Alan A. Musso, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, will host the call, during which they will discuss Targacept’s financial results and provide an update on the company's product development programs and business activities.

A live webcast of the conference call will be accessible from the Investor Relations page of Targacept’s website, www.targacept.com. To ensure a timely connection to the webcast, it is recommended that users register at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. An archived version of the webcast will also be available on Targacept’s website for at least two weeks following the call.
