TC-2216 is a novel small molecule that we are developing as an oral monotherapy for depression and anxiety disorders. TC-2216 modulates the activity of the α4β2 NNR. We are currently conducting a Phase 1 single rising dose clinical trial of this product candidate. The double blind, placebo controlled trial is designed to evaluate the safety and tolerability of TC-2216 and to assess its pharmacokinetic profile in healthy volunteers.
Depression and anxiety disorders often occur together, and antidepressants are often also used to treat anxiety disorders.
In preclinical studies, TC-2216 showed greater potency and antidepressant effects comparable to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tricyclics, which are commonly used treatments for depression. In other preclinical studies, TC-2216 showed anxiety-relieving effects.
Depression/Anxiety
Depression is a severe psychiatric mood disorder. It is characterized by a wide range of symptoms that cause significant impairment in daily functioning, such as persistent despondence, loss of interest in normal activities, changes in appetite, difficulty in sleeping, agitation, apathy or feelings of guilt. The most common forms of depression are major depressive disorder and dysthymia, which is less severe.
Anxiety disorders are generally characterized by symptoms of unfounded chronic, exaggerated worry and tension. There are several different types of anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder. People diagnosed with depression are also often diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
